The Everglades
The Florida Everglades is a spectacular place to work as an Everglades fishing guide. I have been guiding people through the maze of mangrove islands and rivers called the Everglades 10,000 Islands for the past 30 years. I base my Everglades fishing charter business out of Everglades City. Everglades City is the “Gateway” to the Everglades National Park and truly one of the best fishing destinations in the world. Everglades City has many historic sites, like the Everglades Rod and Gun Club and Smallwood’s Trading Post store. The town is made up of sport fisherman and commercial stone crab fisherman. In 1947 the government declared it a national park. When you leave my dock out of Everglades City within minutes you are in a maze of Everglade’s mangrove islands, rivers and shallow bays that hold many species of Everglades fish like snook, redfish, tarpon and trout. These sport fish of the Everglades can truly be an exciting challenge. When fishing in the Everglades you will see many types of wild life, deer, wild hogs, raccoons, alligators and snakes that inhabit these Everglades islands. The bird life of the Everglades is a bird watchers dream. When looking up in the sky you can see bald eagles and osprey soaring high, pelicans crashing into the water of the Everglades trying to catch their dinner. On the mangrove islands is where you will find an Everglades Roseate Spoonbill or Ibis resting their wings. There are as many as 25 wild orchid plants and over 1,000 seed bearing plants that live in the Everglades. There are over 125 different types of trees that live in the Everglades. The mangrove is the most popular. This plant - tree is the key to Everglades; the root system is home to many of the fish that swim in the Everglades. When we take clients fishing in the Everglades we target areas around the mangrove islands. The Everglades National Park starts south of Marco Island, Florida and stretches south to the Florida Keys with over a million square miles of pristine waterways. People who have been fishing with me on my Everglades fishing charters for many years tell me they never get tired of seeing the beauty of the Florida Everglades. Everglades National Park is one of the world’s greatest places to come and visit if you want to fish or just take a walk on one of the many nature trails the park provides.
